Met dit onderzoek willen we gezamelijk experimenteren en technologische praktijken demystificeren.</p><p><strong>Datum:</strong> Zondag, 20 April 2024<br><strong>Start:</strong> 13:00u CET<br><strong>Duur:</strong> +/- 2 uur<br><strong>Deelname:</strong> Gratis (opgeven via: <a href="mailto: info@varia.zone" target="_blank">info@varia.zone</a>)<br><strong>Beginpunt:</strong> Varia, Gouwstraat 3 (3082 BA Rotterdam)</p><p>Dit project wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door de steun van het <a href="https://www.stimuleringsfonds.nl/" target="_blank">Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie</a>.</p><p><strong>ENGLISH:</strong></p><p><br>Get to know the Common Dirt of Charlois; from the neglected patches of soil around the platan trees to the community-run street gardens. Together we will investigate together how nature finds its way through the urban planning of Rotterdam and how residents and municipality interpret these differently. Will you join us?</p><p>On April 20, Easter Sunday, we are organizing the first try-out of the <strong>Common Dirt Map</strong>. On this brand new walking map you can see all the different pieces of urban nature in and around Charlois. The map was designed by Varia member <strong>Niek Hilkmann</strong> and was created after a series of excursions with ecologist <strong>André de Baerdemaeker</strong>. The Common Dirt Map collects knowledge that was gained during these routes and was created to generate enthusiasm for all the nature that the district has to offer. During this try-out we will try out the first version of the map by walking through Charlois together. The route is approximately 7 kilometers long and leads from Varia along the Maastunnel towards the Zuiderpark and back.</p><p><strong>Common Dirt</strong> is an ongoing series of events organized by <strong>Varia</strong>, in which we take a critical look at the cross-connections between biology and technology in Rotterdam. Every season we take a walk to investigate how these two influence each other and how developments in nature and urban policy are entangled. Central to this is an interwoven vision of urban nature, in which the way nature accomodates to city life offers hints and hints for our own survival in times of growing urbanization. This series falls under Varia's <strong>Homebrewing</strong> research thread. Through this research we aim to co-create understandings through collaboratively experimenting with others, and de-mystify current technological practices in order to share and question them more easily.</p><p><strong>Date:</strong> Sunday, 20 April 2024<br><strong>Start:</strong> 13:00h CET<br><strong>Duration:</strong> +/- 2 hours<br><strong>Participation:</strong> Free (please register via: <a href="mailto: info@varia.zone" target="_blank">info@varia.zone</a>)<br><strong>Starting Point:</strong> Varia, Gouwstraat 3 (3082 BA Rotterdam)</p><p>This project is supported by the <a href="https://www.stimuleringsfonds.nl/" target="_blank">Creative Industries Fund NL</a>.</p>

<p>Date: Friday, 14 March 2025</p><p>Door: 19:30u CET</p><p>Start: 20:00u CET</p><p>Entrance: 0/3/5/7/10 euro (Pay What You Can)</p><p>Location: Varia (Gouwstraat 3, Rotterdam)</p><p>Just one day before the new year started, on December 31, 2024 to be precise, the American composer Tom Johnson passed away at his home in Paris. Although The Platform For Extratonality was never able to welcome this pioneer of minimal music to our program, we have always felt a connection to his work within our extratonal efforts. The way in which Johnson combined theatrical and visual elements with theory, philosophy and music has been a great source of inspiration and a direction that we continue to pursue in our programs to this day.</p><p>Therefore, we would like to start 2025 with a celebration of graphic notation and illustrative music in the form of a two-day program. On Friday, March 14, we organize an evening with three lectures/performances on graphic notation at varia. One day later, on Saturday, March 15, we will give a workshop on this same topic during the Rotterdam Illustration Festival at Roodkapje. This functions as a bridge to an evening program at the same location, in which the interaction between illustration and music is explored.</p><p>Floris Vanhoof combines homemade electronic circuits and forgotten projection technologies for installations, expanded cinema performances and music publications. By translating one medium to another, he investigates how our perception operates and what new perspectives arise. Vanhoof is interested in the hybrid form of music, art and cinema. Projections with 16mm film and sounds from a modular synthesizer are central to his work. From this modular musical instrument, in which cables connect electronic sound modules, the belief grew that all possible instruments and ideas can be connected to each other. He makes his own translations from sound to image and vice versa, by connecting one medium to another - not always compatible - medium.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://florisvanhoof.com/">https://florisvanhoof.com/</a></p><p>Bodyscores is a workshop/interactive performance by Karina Dukalska, where you play with communicating ideas through scores and control the movements of performers. How would you transcribe movement into graphics, or sound into text? Karina is a graphic designer, dance educator and interdisciplinary workshop facilitator. Her work often revolves around scores, the documentation and (mis)translation of dance, and the socio-cultural impact this may have.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.karinadukalska.com">https://www.karinadukalska.com</a></p><p>(d)RAW is an electronic instrument controlled by a graphic notation system build Riccardo Marogna. The graphic score acts as a map, navigated by semi-autonomous scanners that translate visual signs into waveforms, patterns, and sound. Inspired by optical sound experiments by Avraamov, Fischinger, McLaren, and Xenakis UPIC system, (d)RAW tries to challenge the boundaries between notation, composition, performance, and instrument design. Riccardo Marogna works with electronics, electroacoustic improvisation and fixed media. His works have been featured also at NIME 2018 (US), MusLab 2016 (Mexico), Matera Intermedia Festival (Italy, 2017), Biennale Musica (Venice, 2008), Experimental Intermedia (NY), Auditorium Parco Della Musica (Rome).</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://riccardomarogna.com/">https://riccardomarogna.com/</a></p><p>This event is made possible with the kind support of Popunie Rotterdam, Stichting Volkskracht, Fonds Podiumkunsten, Gemeente Rotterdam and Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie.</p>

---
<p>Patching, sewing, mending, gluing, adding buttons and zippers and whatever else you have in mind. Lets fix our clothes together and have some tea. All skill levels welcome, we can teach each other! Bring your own sewing supplies. Got something else to fix? A blender, a vacuum cleaner? Bring that too, repairing is repairing.

## On backups
*By Riviera*
On March 8th I left my laptop on suspend for a little bit too long. I
pressed the spacebar and the screen illuminated. Then it crashed. Then
the fan started running on full blast. The LEDs on the function keys
started blinking rapidly yet intermittently. I looked at the manual
for the device. It wasn't clear what was going on. After a bit of
well-timed fiddling with the power button and the emergency reset
button I heard a beep. The computer informed me that the BIOS had been
damaged and was going through a process of self-healing. Did I press
the spacebar too forcibly? Did the machine overheat? I decided
patience was the best policy in this scenario. After some time, it
fixed itself. I was subsequently informed it would be necessary to
update the firmware. That would bring the BIOS back to a recent,
working version. I did so, and then performed a software update.
When setting up my laptop, I installed the boot partition on a
removable USB drive for security reasons. I keep the USB drive on my
physical key ring. This is a good choice but poses a risk which needs
to be mitigated against: it is paramount that the boot partition is
mounted when upgrading pieces of software. This is especially so when
upgrading Linux images. That's because changes are always made to the
initial RAM file system when a new Linux image is installed. The
images, which are the outcome of regenerating the initramfs, are
placed in the boot partition. As I found out, **bad things happen** if
the USB drive containing the boot partition is not mounted when Linux
images are updated.
I was disorientated by the BIOS' self-healing process and overlooked
one key matter. However, I was also alarmed by this and was able to
get a full backup of my home partition. After getting a backup of my
data, I ran the software upgrade, but presumably forgot to mount the
boot partition. As such, the machine's state of homeostasis was short
lived. With 20 lines of code, the entire situation could have been
avoided. But I didn't take that measure, and lost a system because of
it.
This episode brought my attention to the importance of backups. In
short, I'm planning to upgrade the processor in the Klankschool Server
in April or May during one of the repair cafe evenings. Prior to
undertaking this task, I intend to create a backup of data on the
machine. More specifically, I want to run regular backups using either
`duplicity`, `restic` or `borg`. FTP could be a practical way of doing
this over the internet with a bit of configuration.
There are lots of Routers at CATU running Openwrt. I believe it is
possible to attach a Hard Drive to these routers via USB and use it as
a Network Attached Storage device. Alternately, Rosa found a NAS
device in the trash so perhaps that could be used instead. On par it
would be pragmatic to use a router as a backup system, rather than
setting up another computer to do this. Knoflook has been attempting
to set up a Cisco switch to enhance the network infrastructure in the
building.
In other news, the calendar is kicking off but there's a configuration
issue. For two reasons, therefore, I think it will be necessary to
re-introduce containers on the Klankschool server. The first reason is
that, along with my laptop crashing, a Gitea runner went offline. The
gitea runner was used in tandem with the Klankschool website to keep
it in sync with the Gitea repository. If containers are re-introduced
on the server it will be possible to containerised the Gitea
runner. For some reason, it is not possible to run the runner when the
Gitea instance is running. Secondly, Containerising the Gancio
(calendar) instance will allow for resolving the configuration issue.
